I really enjoyed “Dear Desolation”, I think it’s your most accomplished album, it feels like you’ve developed a more personal sound and style. How did you conceive it?
It feels great to have produced our most completed album to date. It was a simple matter of listening to our instincts and making sure we knew what our vision was throughout the record making process, after that, we just worked within ourselves to create the record we felt like making at the time.
In “Dear Desolation” I can hear traditional death metal influences. What are your main ones?
We have a wide range of influences, not only metal bands. If we had to choose it would be quite obvious: Cannibal Corpse, Behemoth, Suffocation, Decapitated. We love death metal, and there are too many great bands to list whose records we admire.
Can you tell something about the themes of the lyrics?
The lyrics on this album are a lot more instrospective than on our last two, dealing more with the human condition and the thought of whether or not we should live forever. A lot of the lyrics touch on mortality and the finality of being an atheist.
You are considered a cornerstone of deathcore and “modern metal”, how does it feel to be an influence for so many bands?
If people are nice enough to say that about us then great! We are only focused on making the records we enjoy and touring as much as possible. We are truly lucky to have the opportunity to travel the world playing music and we try to go to at least one new city or country each year.
Can you tell us the secret to write interesting music in genre considered “boring and easy” by metal elitists?
If we knew how we did it, we’d tell you!
What is the most important piece of advice you could give to someone who would like to start a career in metal?
To quote Jiro Ono, ‘Once you decide on your occupation you must immerse yourself in your work. You have to fall in love with your work. Never complain about your job. You must dedicate your life to mastering your skill. That’s the secret of success, and is the key to being regarded honorably.’
What do you think about crowdfunding? Do you think you will ask money to your fans to release an album someday?
It for sure works for some bands and is a great avenue for them to release a record and have their own platform. I don’t see a future where we will do any crowdfunding.
What Thy Art Is Murder’s album are you attached the most?
The newest one, “Dear Desolation”.
What are your plans for the future?
Tour, tour, tour and then write new music.
What do think about your italians fan?
We love Italy, every time we come over the shows get crazier and more and more fans come out. We can’t wait to be back.
