[wptab name=’ITA’] Poco dopo l’uscita del video di “King For A Day”, primo brano estratto dal nuovo album “Bringer Of Pain”, abbiamo avuto l’occasione di un’intervista via mail con i finlandesi Battle Beast sia sul loro nuovo lavoro ma anche su argomenti più vari. Ecco a voi quanto emerso dalla nostra chiacchierata!

Dunque, i Battle Beast sono una band relativamente nuova nella scena metal, dato che il vostro primo album risale al 2011. Come avete avuto l’idea generale di questo progetto? Quali erano le vostre maggiori influenze musicali allora e quali sono quelle odierne?
Sin da quando avevo 14 anni, ho sempre voluto suonare in una band come questa. Volevo una band che facesse solamente canzoni che spaccano e che intrattenesse il pubblico suonando live. Forse è solo la mia esperienza personale, ma da teenager quando andavo a qualche concerto mi sembrava che le band se ne stessero lì guardando i loro strumenti senza porre il minimo sforzo nell’intrattenere il pubblico. Volevo una band che fosse l’antitesi di tutto questo. Qualche forza superiore deve avermi sentito, vedendo dove mi trovo ora, quindici anni dopo!
Il vostro è un tipo di power metal piuttosto particolare, secondo me. Spesso in questo scenario è facile ricadere nei soliti stili e suoni stereotipati del genere. Quali sono secondo voi le principali caratteristiche che permettono ai Battle Beast di spiccare tra gli altri?
Penso che uno dei nostri vantaggi chiave sia il fatto che non ci siamo strettamente limitati a seguire ciecamente ciò che caratterizza questo genere. Ovviamente abbiamo anche canzoni tipicamente power metal, ma anche molte altre cose. Se ripenso ad una delle nostre precedenti canzoni, “Touch In The Night”, è stata sia una sorta di grande hit, ma anche una canzone che in MOLTISSIMI hanno odiato. In ogni caso, è comunque un bene che le persone parlino di noi! Penso che ormai le persone abbiano imparato ad aspettarsi qualcosa di sorprendente da ogni nostro lavoro.
Non ci sono molte band con membri femminili, e soprattutto con frontwomen come Noora. Pensate che ancora oggi nel 2017 la gente abbia qualche problema nel vedere le donne come membri di successo nel mondo della musica metal?
Sfortunatamente sì. Ricordo che quando abbiamo rilasciato il nostro primo album “Steel” nel 2011 ci furono molti commenti sessisti online secondo cui “una donna non dovrebbe cantare in quel modo”. Molti ovviamente sono a proprio agio con tutto ciò, ma in molte zone ci sono ancora persone che non accettano che le donne possano avere un ruolo importante come musiciste metal. Si spera che col tempo e con più band come noi la situazione possa migliorare.
Parlando del vostro nuovo lavoro “Bringer Of Pain”, la sua uscita è prevista per febbraio e ne abbiamo già avuto un assaggio col video di “King For A Day”. In questa canzone possiamo cogliere un sound decisamente anni ’80, giusto? Vi ispirate spesso alla musica di quegli anni?
Assolutamente! Almeno per me, la musica degli anni ’80 ha una grande influenza.
Sempre riguardo a “King For A Day”, la canzone racconta una storia molto vicina alla corrente situazione politica in molti paesi, parlando di uomini che pensano solo al guadagno e manipolano gli altri per il proprio profitto, giusto? Questo sarà un tema che ritroveremo ancora nell’album, sia in generale sia in maniera più specifica?
Qualcosa del genere, sì. Non c’è un tema preciso nell’album, ma tematiche di quel genere ricompaiono in parecchie canzoni.
Dopo la release dell’album sarete impegnati tra marzo ed aprile con un tour da headliner in giro per l’Europa. Avete pianificato di partecipare a qualche festival dopo queste date?
Dopo il nostro Euro-tour faremo quattro settimane in America in supporto ai Sabaton, dopodichè sarà tempo per i festival estivi. Ci sono in realtà ancora pochi show già annunciati. Potete trovarli sia sulla nostra pagina sia tramite l’app Facebook.
Un’ultima domanda, cosa potete dirci riguardo i piani futuri della band?
Come detto prima, passeremo un sacco di tempo in tour per ora. Stiamo facendo nuovi piani per l’autunno proprio in questo momento, quindi difficilmente potremo riposarci un po’! A parte questo non c’è molto altro, se non continuare con nuovi album e tour finchè avremo raggiunto il dominio del mondo!

L’album uscirà il 17 febbraio e nel frattempo abbiamo visto l’uscita di un nuovo video, quello di “Familiar Hell”. Non ci resta che attenderne il rilascio per ascoltare tutte le tredici tracce e goderci gli show del tour!

[wptab name=’ENG’]Right after the video for “King For A Day” came out, first extract from the upcoming album “Bringer Of Pain”, we had the chance to have an e-mail interview with the Finnish power metallers Battle Beast both about their new work and various matters. Here’s what came out from our chat: enjoy!
Hello guys, I’m Elena from MetalPit, thank you so much for the time you can dedicate to us!
My pleasure. Thanks for having me here!
So, Battle Beast is a relatively new band in the metal scene, since your first album was published in 2011. How did you come up with the overall idea of this project? What were your major musical influences then and now?
Ever since I was 14 all I wanted to do was play in a band like this. I wanted to be in a band that only made killer songs and would be entertaining live. Maybe it’s just my personal experience, but when I was a teenager going to shows, it seemed all the bands were just looking at their instruments without the slightest effort to keep the audience entertained. I wanted to have a band that would be the antithesis of all that. Some higher force must have heard me, since I’m here 15 years later!
You play some very peculiar kind of power metal, I think. Sometimes in the power metal scene it’s easy to fall into a stereotyped sound and style. What are the main features that you think can make Battle Beast stand out in this field?
I think one of our key advantages is that we haven’t boxed ourselves to tightly music-wise. Of course we make traditional and power metal songs, but also much other stuff. If I think about the previous song ”Touch in the Night”, it was somewhat a big hit but also a song that MANY people absolutely hated. Still, I think it’s good to keep people talking! I think by now people know to expect something surprising from each of our releases.
There are not so many bands that have female members, expecially frontwomen like Noora. Do you think that now in 2017 people still struggle to see women being successfully part of the metal music world?
Unfortunately yes. I remember when we put out our first album ”Steel” back in 2011, and there were very many sexist comments online stating that “a woman shouldn’t be singing like that”. Most people of course are very ok with it, but in some areas there are still people who can’t live with women taking role as metal musicians. Hopefully with time and more bands like us it’ll get better.
Talking about your new work “Bringer Of Pain”, it is about to come out in February and we’ve already had a little taste of it with the music video for “King For A Day”. In this song we can spot some kind of ’80s sound, can’t we? Do you often take inspiration from those years for your music?
Absolutely! At least for me, music of the ’80s is a massive influence.
Still about the song “King For A Day”, it tells a story that is very close to the current political situation in a lot of countries, talking about men who only care about making money and manipulate others for their own profit, right? Will it be a theme that we’ll meet again in the album, both generally and more specifically?
Something like that, yes. There’s not a particular theme on the album, but topics of that sort do come up in several songs.
After the release of the album you’ll be busy between March and April with a headlining tour around Europe. After this, have you already planned to play at some music festival?
After the Euro-tour we’re doing four weeks in North-America supporting Sabaton, then it’s time for the summer festivals. There are actually quite a few shows announced already. You can check them all on our website or thru our Facebook app.
A final question, what can you tell us about the future plans for the band?
Like I said in the previous question, hell of a lot of touring for now. New plans are made for the Autumn as we speak, so it’s unlikely to slow down for quite a time! Other than that there isn’t much to say; keep doing killer albums and tours until we’ve reached world domination!

The album will come out on February the 17th and in the meanwhile another music video came out, for the song “Familiar Hell”. So we just have to wait for it to hear all the thirteen tracks and enjoy their shows on tour!
