A seguito del lancio di “You Are We” abbiamo avuto modo di scambiare qualche parola con Aaran Mckenzie dei While She Sleeps, a voi la nostra intervista!

Come avete iniziato questa avventura? Come la riassumereste sino ad oggi?
Abbiamo cominciato questo viaggio nel 2006. La band è nata poiché eravamo tutti amici di scuola e ascoltavamo lo stesso tipo di musica. Eravamo tutti in gruppi differenti che ad un certo punto arrivarono a suonare assieme e da qui la decisione di formare assieme una nuova band. Incontrammo il gruppo di Loz al nostro terzo show di sempre, a Doncaster, e divenimmo istantaneamente amici. Dopo aver suonato per anni nello stesso circuito locale, nel 2009 abbiamo deciso di abbandonare i nostri rispettivi lavori e prendere più seriamente la band. Nello stesso periodo il nostro cantante principale decise che questo percorso non faceva per lui e quindi prendemmo a bordo Loz e il resto è storia: siamo stati assieme in tour in giro per il mondo e stiamo per pubblicare il nostro terzo studio album full length.
Il vostro nome ha un significato particolare?
Originariamente lo abbiamo preso da una rivista femminile: il titolo riguardava una donna che ha evirato il marito “Mentre Stava Dormendo” (eng: “While He Was Sleeping”) e quindi lo abbiamo modificato in “While She Sleeps”. Questa è l’origine del nome della band, ma l’effettivo significato da cui lo facciamo derivare è che “Lei” è la personificazione di una nave che si è inabissata sul fondo dell’oceano mentre il “dormire” simboleggia il decesso della stessa.
Quali sono le vostre influenze principali? I vostri gruppi preferiti?
Crescendo abbiamo ascoltato una gran varietà musicale, ma il gruppo è d’accordo che le principali band più influenti sono senza dubbio Thrice e Darkest Hour: ci hanno mostrato che non dobbiamo conformarci ai limiti di genere e possiamo spingere la nostra musica in qualsiasi direzione vogliamo.
Siete una band molto aperta e condividete pressoché tutto con i vostri fan. Qual’è l’aspetto migliore di ciò? Avete mai incontrato problemi a causa di questa scelta?
No, ovviamente no. Questo è ciò che crea una relazione più profonda tra noi ed i nostri fan e crediamo sia imperativo per il nostro successo.
Come vi è venuta l’idea di utilizzare il crowdfunding e rendere partecipi i fan alla produzione dell’album?
Perché non sentivamo che una major ci potesse servire molto bene o rappresentare chi siamo come band o persone. Non siamo d’accordo con il sistema delle label e sentivamo di avere una connessione sufficientemente forte con la nostra fanbase per proseguire da indipendenti e questo non ha fatto altro che rafforzare la nostra relazione.
Potete introdurre “You Are We” ai nostri lettori e raccontare loro cosa significa per voi?
“You Are We” riguarda il creare unità. La stessa ragione per la quale abbiamo deciso di renderci indipendenti è il voler eradicare qualunque barriera tra noi ed i nostri fan. Tutto questo riguarda anche un livello più elevato: con tutti i problemi che affliggono il mondo, sentiamo che l’unità delle persone sia l’ultima strada per sormontarli. Cambiare te stesso ad un livello personale è il passo dal quale puoi iniziare. Abbiamo i leader del mondo che stanno promuovendo la divisione dell’umanità per razza, cultura, o qualsiasi altro mezzo. In un mondo come questo sentiamo di avere una piattaforma per promuovere qualcosa di buono. Questo è il motivo per cui abbiamo chiamato l’album “You Are We”. Perché noi siamo un tutt’uno. Chi siamo? VOI SIETE NOI.
Vedervi sul palco è stato straordinario, avete un’energia incredibile. Qual è il vostro punto di forza? Come riuscite ad esprimervi in quel modo?
Il tempo trascorso sul palco è per noi una maniera di rilasciare un sacco di stress accumulato. È quasi una meditazione per noi, è dove ci sentiamo meglio e, in uno strano modo, troviamo la nostra pace.
Come vi siete trovati in Italia? Tornereste?
Amiamo l’Italia e non vediamo l’ora di tornare. Abbiamo progetti per la fine dell’anno, mi pare, per ripresentarci, ma nulla di cui si possa effettivamente parlare per ora.
Quali sono i vostri progetti per il futuro?
Semplicemente un tour non stop di questo album in giro per il mondo!

So, how did you start this adventure? How would you resume it up to now?
We started this journey back in 2006. We started this band because we were all friends in school and all was into the same kind of music. We were all in different bands that played together at some point and decided to start a band together. We met Loz’s band at our 3rd ever show in Doncaster and instantly became friends. After years of playing the same local circuit we decided to all quit our jobs and take the band more seriously in 2009. This is when our current lead singer at the time decided it wasn’t for him, so we got Loz on board and the rest is history. We’ve toured the world together and about to release our third full length studio album.
Does your name have a particular meaning?
We orignally got our name from a woman’s chat magazine. The headline was about a woman chopping her husbands penis off ‘While He Was Sleeping’. So we changed it to ‘While She Sleeps’. That was the origin of where the name came from but the actual meaning we derive from it is that the ‘She’ is a personification of a ship that has sunk to the bottom of the ocean, and the ‘sleeps’ being symbolic for the demise of the ship
What are your main influences? Your favourite bands?
We all listened to a wide variety of music growing up but the main influential bands that all the band can agree is definitely Thrice and Darkest Hour. They showed us that we don’t have to conform to the boundaries of genres and we can push our music in any direction we want.
You are a very open band in sharing almost everything with your fans. What is the best thing about this? Have you encountered problems with this choice?
No of course not. It is what creates a deeper relationship with us and our fans and believe it is imperative to our success.
How did you come up with the idea of using crowdfunding to let the fans take part to the production of the album?
Because we didn’t feel a major label served our band very well or represented who we are as a band or people. We don’t agree with the label system and felt we had a strong enough connection with our fan base to go ahead independent, which has only made our relationship stronger.
Can you introduce “You are We” to our readers and tell them what does it mean for you?
“You Are We” is all about creating unity. The very reason we decided to go independent is because we wanted to eradicate any barriers between us and our fans. This also speaks on a higher level, with all the worlds problems we feel that people uniting is the ultimate way to overcome this. By changing yourself on a personal level is where you can start. We have our world leaders that are promoting division of humanity by race, cultures, or whatever it is. In a world like this we felt we have a platform to promote something good. Which is why we called the album You Are we. Because we are all one. Who are we? YOU ARE WE.
Seeing you on stage has been extraordinary, you had an incredible energy. What is your strength? How can you express yourself like that?
Time on stage is a way for us to release a lot of built up stress. It’s almost meditative for us. It’s where we are most comfortable and in a strange way, find our peace.
How did you feel in Italy? Would you come back?
We love Italy, and we can’t wait to come back. We have plans for the end of the year I think to come back but nothing I can talk about just yet.
What are your projects for the future?
Just none stop touring this album at the minute around the world!
