In occasione dell’uscita del nuovo album”The Holographic Principle” (a fine articolo il link della nostra recensione), abbiamo avuto l’occasione di intervistare la bellissima Simone Simons, cantante degli Epica: ci parla della loro ultima fatica, del significato di alcuni testi, e abbiamo provato a conoscerla un po’ meglio…
Federico: “The Holographic Principle” è finalmente uscito ed è stato ampiamente promosso dalla critica e dai fan. Tu personalmente cosa pensi di questo lavoro? C’è una tua canzone preferita nell’album?
Simone: Si tratta di un pezzettino di arte che abbiamo creato tutti insieme. Un intenso processo in cui tutti noi abbiamo scavato veramente in profondità per ottenere il miglior risultato possibile. Insieme ad una grande squadra abbiamo mostrato il nostro lato migliore.
Federico: Il tema principale è proprio il principio olografico e ho notato che Mark se ne è approcciato nei testi in modo più scientifico, mentre te in modo più filosofico, in stile “Sensorium”. Ma in tutto l’album, esprimete la realtà dei fatti senza mai giudicare. Ecco, a tal proposito, cosa ne pensi personalmente del principio olografico? Viviamo davvero in una specie di matrix?
Simone: Mi piace prendere la posizione della filosofa e mettere in discussione tutto. Sono piuttosto scettica, ma trovo l’idea affascinante.
Federico: “Dancing In A Hurricane” invece si scosta dalla tematica principale, per affrontare un argomento complesso: i bambini che vivono in territori dove la violenza è all’ordine del giorno. Ora che sei diventata mamma immagino che sia una tematica che hai molto a cuore.
Simone: Esatto è un argomento vicino al mio cuore. Lo sento sia per i genitori che per i bambini nello stesso tempo. Come genitore, si desidera fornire al bambino i bisogni fondamentali come sicurezza, riparo, cibo e sicurezza. Che è quasi impossibile in zone di guerra.
Federico: “Edge Of The Blade” mi ha colpito molto: c’è un motivo particolare per cui hai scritto questo testo?
Simone: Parla dei tempi moderni in cui tutti sono ossessionati con l’essere perfetti, ma chi definisce cos’è davvero la perfezione?
Federico: “Immortal Melancholy” ha un testo molto profondo e delicato. Puoi raccontarcelo?
Simone: Si tratta di una storia vera di due amanti che hanno scelto di morire allo stesso tempo perché sono entrambi malati, ma uno ha aspettative di vita più breve e l’altro non vuole vivere da solo. È una storia bella e cupa allo stesso tempo.
Federico: Nella vita di tutti i giorni, che musica ascolta Simone Simons?
Simone: Mi piace ascoltare Opeth e Lacuna Coil. Grandi band e persone fantastiche!
Federico: Ci sono band/cantanti che ammiri particolarmente e/o con cui ti piacerebbe duettare o fare un pezzo insieme?
Simone: Sono sempre stata una grande fan dei Rammstein e mi piacerebbe molto collaborare con loro un giorno.
Federico: Cosa ne pensi della scena metal italiana? Sappiamo che sei molto amica di Cristina Scabbia, ma ci sono anche altre band del nostro paese che conosci e apprezzi?
Simone: Cristina è una bomba! La amo! Ha un cuore umile e dolce. I Fleshgod Apocalypse si uniranno a noi nel nostro Tour del Nord America questo autunno. Ho ascoltato la loro musica e mi hanno impressionata!
Federico: Alissa White Gluz ha recentemente annunciato il suo nuovo progetto solista, è un qualcosa a cui hai mai pensato anche te? Ricordo di un progetto jazz che avevi in mente…
Simone: Vedremo cosa succederà, chissà magari un domani.
Federico: Hai iniziato con il canto lirico dopo aver ascoltato Tarja Turunen in “Oceanborn”. Che effetto ti fa sapere che oggi potrebbero esserci molte ragazze che iniziano un percorso musicale avendo te come fonte di ispirazione?
Simone: E’ ancora un concetto strano per me che la gente mi vede come un punto di riferimento. Mi sento onorata.
Federico: Cosa farebbe Simone Simons se non fosse la cantante degli Epica?
Simone: Vorrei essere un’artista di qualche tipo. La creatività scorre nelle mie vene.
Federico: C’è una canzone in particolare della vostra discografia che non ti piace o non vuoi suonare live, per qualsivoglia motivo?
Simone: Tutti noi abbiamo i nostri preferiti e i meno preferiti. Recentemente abbiamo suonato Seif al Din, ma io non sono troppo appassionata a quella canzone.
Federico: Cosa ne pensi della qerelle circa il termine “female fronted metal”? C’è chi sostiene sia offensivo e maschilista e chi invece non pensa abbia importanza. Ti senti sminuita quando si riferiscono agli Epica in tal modo?
Simone: L’ultima volta che ho controllato Mark era ancora un uomo. Quindi questo termine non è nemmeno corretto ;)
Al giorno d’oggi ci sono tanti stili diversi di metal con una cantante. Non ti dice molto il sapere che la voce della band è femminile.
Federico: Dopo ‘Universal Death Squad’ ci saranno altri singoli/video? Trovo che “Beyond The Matrix” si presti molto bene come singolo…
Simone: Sicuramente ci saranno altri video…
Federico: Durante la fase di registrazioni, avete avuto qualche momento di disorientamento per quanto concerne sia il sound sia i testi o eravate sicuri e convinti di quello che stavate componendo?
Simone: Circa il 90% di tutte le melodie sono già decise quando si entra in studio. Tuttavia, ci piace improvvisare qua e là per vedere cosa viene fuori.
Federico: Grazie per l’intervista, vuoi dire qualcosa ai fan di metalpit?
Simone: Grazie mille! Ci vediamo in tour!

1. “The Holographic Principle” is finally out and it has been widely promoted by critics and fans. What do you personally think of this work? What’s your favorite song?
Simone: It is a piece of art that we created together. Such an intense process where we all dig really deep to get the best result possible. Together with a great team we showed our best side.
2. The main theme is the holographic principle. Mark approached it in a scientific way, while you in philosophical way, in “Sensorium” style, but in the entire album, you express the reality of the facts without ever judging. What do you think personally of the holographic principle? We are really living in a “matrix”?
Simone: I like to take the position of the philosopher and question all. I am rather skeptical, but find the idea fascinating.
3. “Dancing In A Hurricane” deviates from the main theme to tackle a complex topic: children living in areas where violence is commonplace. Now that you’re a mom I think it’s a subject that you have much to heart. Isn’t it?
Simone: It is close to my heart. I feel for the parents and the children at the same time. As a parent you want to provide your child the basic needs like safety, shelter, food and security. That is almost impossible in war zones.
4. “Edge Of The Blade” impressed me: there is a particular reason why you wrote it?
Simone: It deals about the modern times where everybody is obsessed with being perfect, but who defines perfection?
5. “Immortal Melancholy” is a very profound lyric. Can you tell us about it?
Simone: It is a real story about two lovers that chose to die at the same time because they are both ill, but one will have a shorter life expectancy and the other doesn’t want to live alone. It is beautiful and dark at the same time.
6. In the life of every day, what kind of music do you listen?
Simone: I like to listen to Opeth and Lacuna Coil. Great bands and great people!
7. Are there bands / singers that you particularly admire? Are there any band/ singer you would make a duet?
Simone: I have always been a huge Rammstein fan and would love to collaborate with them one day.
8. What do you think of the Italian metal scene? We know you’re a friend of Cristina Scabbia, but are there other italian bands do you know and love?
Simone: Cristina is the bomb! Love her! Such a humble and sweet heart she has. Fleshgod Apocalypse is joining us on our North American Tour this fall. I checked out their music and was impressed!
9. Alissa White Gluz recently announced her new solo project. Is something that you never even thought about? We will see a Simone Simons project? I remember a jazz project…
Simone: That will still happen, one day.
10. You started with the lyric singing after listening Tarja Turunen on Oceanborn. How does it feel to know that today many girls take Simone Simons as inspiration?
Simone: It is still is a weird concept to me that people see me as a role model. I feel honored.
11. What would you do if you were not the singer of Epica?
Simone: I would be an artist of some kind. Creativity flows through my veins.
12. Is there a particular song in your discography that you don’t like or don’t want to play live, for some reason?
Simone: We all have our favorites and least favorites. We recently played Seif al Din, and I am not too fond of that song.
13. What do you think of the qerelle about the term “female fronted band”? Some say it’s offensive and sexist and some does not care. Do you feel belittled when they refer to Epica in that mode?
Simone: Last time I checked Mark was still a man. So that term is also not correct ;)
Nowadays there are so many different styles of metal bands with a female singer. It doesn’t tell you any more than the fact that there is a female singer.
14. After ‘Universal Death Squad’, are there other singles / videos? For me “Beyond The Matrix” would be perfect. What do you think?
Simone: There is more to come indeed!
15. During recording, do you had some moment of disorientation for the sound or lyrics or you had clear ideas when you entered in the studio?
Simone: About 90% of all the melodies are decided when you enter the studio. However, we do like to improvise here and there to see what comes out.
