Abbiamo avuto modo di intervistare Helle Bogdanova, cantante della band ucraina IGNEA. Il 16 febbraio 2017 è uscito il loro primo album intitolato “The Sign of Faith”. Ci siamo fatti raccontare alcuni dettagli sull’album e sulla band stessa. Buona lettura!

Personalmente lo ho adorato. Cosa ne pensate voi? Siete soddisfatti? Parlateci un po’ della scelta del titolo, dell’artwork e di come è nata l’idea.
Ciao! Grazie per averci invitato. Siamo felici che ti sia piaciuto il nostro nuovo album. Siamo molto entusiasti di averlo realizzato. Sai, questo è il nostro primo album integrale, e ci sembra di esserci spostati ad un livello superiore con il suo rilascio. Abbiamo deciso il titolo quando ormai le registrazioni erano ormai concluse. Inizialmente, volevamo chiamarlo “Şeytanu Akbar”, come la prima traccia tratta dal LP. Tuttavia, abbiamo pensato non fosse corretto, in quanto non rappresentava lo stato d’animo dell’intero album, ma solo di quella traccia. Pertanto, abbiamo scelto una frase di questa canzone — “The Sign of Faith” [NdT “Nel segno della fede”] — e, dal momento che la metà dell’album è dedicata alla religione, alle idee e alle credenze delle persone, si adattava molto bene. Per quanto riguarda l’artwork, questa è la seconda volta che compriamo un pezzo già finito da uno studio di design. Si abbinava perfettamente alle nostre canzoni e alle sensazioni dell’album. Piuttosto semplice.
Secondo voi c’è stata un’evoluzione dall’EP del 2013 “Sputnik” all’album “The Sign of Faith”? Cosa è cambiato?
Come mai la scelta di cambiare il nome della band da “Parallax” a “Ignea”? Cosa significa per voi?
L’evoluzione è stata enorme. Ogni traccia di Evgeny [NdT si riferisce a Evgeny Zhytnyuk, tastierista e fondatore della band], secondo me, è andata migliorando, in termini di composizione almeno. Stiamo anche crescendo come musicisti. In questo album, ho potuto utilizzare la mia voce pulita e anche quella growl, il che è molto importante per me. Siamo anche cresciuti come persone. Nonostante siamo tutti molto giovani (tra i 21 e i 25 anni), ci sentiamo come se il nostro primo EP lo avessimo prodotto da bambini, o almeno da adolescenti :D
Abbiamo cambiato il nome della band perchè ce ne erano già troppe chiamate “Parallax” e perchè era il momento giusto per un cambiamento, prima di realizzare il nostro primo video e di pubblicare il nostro primo LP.
Mi ha particolarmente colpito la prima traccia dell’album intitolata “Shaitanu Akbar”. Quale messaggio volete trasmettere con questa canzone, e in particolare con la vostra musica?
Questa è la canzone più controversa dell’intero album. Nonostante il titolo provocatorio, la nostra intenzione è quella di portare l’idea della pace. Quello che vogliamo dire è che non esistono ragioni per uccidere altre persone, che sia per regime, fede o principi morali. Parliamo principalmente di terrorismo islamico in questa canzone, come una delle piaghe sociale del XXI secolo, che prende molte vite innocenti. Tuttavia, questo vale per ogni essere umano sulla Terra, a prescindere dalla religione.
Non abbiamo nessun messaggio particolare che vogliamo trasmettere con le nostre canzoni, sono molto diverse, e continueremo a muoverci in questa direzione. Creiamo arte per l’amore dell’arte e per espressione di noi stessi.
Il vostro primo singolo “Alga” ha ricevuto più di un milione di visualizzazioni su YouTube: più che positivo per una band emergente come voi. Complimenti! Qual è stata la vostra reazione? E come è stato sentir suonare la propria musica da un’orchestra in carne ed ossa?
Grazie! Beh, onestamente non ci aspettavamo una tale reazione, ma questa canzone ha portato la maggior parte degli ascoltatori alla band, perciò non possiamo esserne più felici. Ma quello che mi piacerebbe dire è che non c’è stato alcun miracolo. Abbiamo lavorato duramente per creare questa pista e girare il video, abbiamo fatto tutto da soli, senza alcun aiuto finanziario. E abbiamo impiegato molti sforzi nella sua promozione. Così, nel nostro caso, qualunque cosa otteniamo non è a causa di fortuna, ma a causa del duro lavoro.
Tremavo quando ho sentito tutta l’orchestra suonare la nostra musica. Questa sensazione è indimenticabile.
A proposito di orchestra: da dove viene questo desiderio di accostare la musica metal con quella sinfonica? Come procedete in questa fase di composizione e registrazione?
Qualunque cosa scriva Evgeny, la sua musica conterrà sempre degli elementi sinfonici, o come sono solita dire, elementi OST. E sono sicura che avverrà con molte più tracce in futuro.
Per quanto riguarda il processo di composizione, lui scrive tutto da solo, anche se non ha alcuna educazione musicale. Quando gli arrangiamenti orchestrali per “Alga” sono stati conclusi, abbiamo chiesto aiuto ad alcuni musicisti accademici per presentare tutte le parti, in termini di note, a tutti gli strumenti musicali.
Gli Ignea si definiscono una band modern oriental metal. Perché avete scelto questo genere in particolare? Da cosa e/o chi siete stati ispirati?
Tutto quello che creiamo proviene dalle nostre anime e dalle cose che ci ispirano. Può essere qualunque cosa – un dipinto, un film, un mito, una questione sociale…
Assolutamente nulla. Noi pertanto non possiamo promettere che suoneremo per sempre questo genere. Ma molti ascoltatori ci hanno detto che gli piace la nostra musica proprio per la sua diversità, quindi penso che non sia un problema.
Impossibile non notare la grande capacità della cantante Helle nel passare dal canto pulito a quello growl. Da dove deriva questa scelta? Ci sono stati degli studi particolari?
No, non ho studiato canto per niente, anche se mi piacerebbe migliorarmi come cantante. In effetti, quando abbiamo registrato “Sputnik” [NdT si tratta del primo EP degli Ignea], usavo già il growl, specialmente durante le esibizioni live. Ma ho avuto seri problemi con la mia voce dopo una malattia, proprio durante le registrazioni, quindi decidemmo di registrare il growl di Evgeny. Sai, penso che si adatti molto bene con quelle canzoni. E a mio parere, le nuove canzoni risultano meglio con il mio growl, e molte persone concordano.
Mi piace molto la voce extreme, aiuta a dare la giusta espressione.
Secondo voi è difficile emergere come metal band da un panorama musicale come quello ucraino? E cosa ne pensate del panorama musicale internazionale delle metal band con voci femminili?
Penso che sia difficile emergere come band in ogni genere e in ogni paese. In Ucraina è difficile a causa dei problemi economici e della non popolarità della musica heavy. Voglio dire, Germania e Francia sono meglio da questo punto di vista, hanno rispettivamente le industrie e le infrastrutture adatte. Tuttavia, il 95% dei nostri fans non sono in Ucraina, e quindi non ci lamentiamo.
Credo che non dovremmo parlare di voci femminili o maschili all’interno della musica metal. Non dovrebbe essere ne un vantaggio ne uno svantaggio.
Per concludere, che cosa dobbiamo aspettarci in futuro dagli Ignea? Che progetti avete?
Al momento, i nostri piani sono quelli di concentrarci sulle performance live. Abbiamo firmato un contratto con agenzia tedesca – EAM Agentur – e al momento stanno lavorando per organizzarci un tour europeo, il che è molto importante per la nostra band. Come ho detto, la maggior parte dei nostril fan non si trovano in Ucraina. Stiamo anche progettando di realizzare altri video quest’anno. E di fatto, abbiamo già nuove tracce per un altro lavoro, ma ne discuteremo i dettagli più avanti.

What do you think about it? Are you satisfied? Tell us something about the choice of the title, the artwork and the birth of the idea.
Hi! Thank you for having us. We’re glad that you like our new album. We are extremely happy to have release it. You know, this is our first ever full-length album, and we feel like we moved onto higher level with its release. We came up with the title when recordings have already been done. Firstly, we wanted to call it “Şeytanu Akbar”, like the first song from the LP. However, we felt it wasn’t right, because it doesn’t reflect the mood of the whole album, just one track. Therefore, we chose a phrase from this song — “The Sign of Faith” — and, as half of the album is dedicated to religion, ideas and beliefs of people, it suited very well. As for the artwork, this is the second time we bought a finished peace from one design studio. It just matched our songs and the feeling of the album. Pretty simple.
Do you think there has been an evolution from the 2013 EP “Sputnik” to the album “The Sign of Faith”? What is changed?
Why did you change the band’s name from “Parallax” to “Ignea”? What does it mean for you?
The evolution has been enormous. Each next track of Evgeny, in my opinion, is better and better, in terms of composition, at least. We are also developing as musicians. On this album, I already perform both clean and extreme vocals, which is very important for me. We also do grow up as people. Although we’re now pretty young (from 21 to 25 years old), we feel like our EP was recorded when we were kids or at least teenagers :D
We changed the band’s name, because there were too many bands called “Parallax” and because it was the right moment for a change, before releasing the first video and coming up with the first LP.
I was particularly struck by the first track of the album titled “Shaitanu Akbar.” What message do you want to convey with this song, and with your music in general?
This is the most controversial song from the whole album. Despite provocative title of the song, our intention is to carry the idea of peace. What we want to say is that there is no reasonable cause to kill other people, be it regime, faith or moral principles. We mainly speak about islamic terrorism in this song, as one of the social plagues of 21st century, taking lots of innocent lives. However, this applies to every human on Earth, regardless of their religion.
We do not have any particular message we want to deliver with all our songs, they are very diverse, and we will continue moving in this direction. We create art for the sake of art and expression of ourselves.
Your first single “Alga” has received over a million views on YouTube: more than positive for an up-and-coming band like you. Congratulations! What was your reaction? And how does it feel to hear a real orchestra playing your own music?
Thank you! Well, we didn’t expect such a reaction, to be honest, but this song brought major parts of our listeners to the band, so we can’t be more happy. But, what I’d like to say is that there is no miracle. We worked hard to create this track and shoot the video, we did everything on our own, without any financial help. And we put many efforts into its promotion. So, in our case, whatever we achieve, it is not because of luck, but because of hard work.
I was trembling when I heard the whole orchestra playing our music. This feeling is unforgettable.
About the orchestra: why the idea to mix metal and symphonic music? How do you proceed in this phase of composition and recording?
Whatever Evgeny writes, his music always contains some symphonic or, as I’m used to say, OST elements. And I am sure he will come up with more symphonic tracks in future.
As for composition process, he writes everything on his own, although he has no music education. When the orchestral arrangements for Alga were finished, we requested help from some academic musicians to present all parts for all music instruments the way they should be, you know, in terms of notes.
Ignea is defined as a modern oriental metal band. Why did you choose this particular genre? What and/or who inspires you?
Everything we create comes from our souls and things that inspire us. It can be anything — a painting, a movie, a myth, a social issue…
Absolutely anything. We therefore cannot promise you we will play this genre forever. But many listeners tell us they like our music because of diversity, so I don’t think that would be a problem.
It’s impossible not to notice the large capacity of the singer Helle to switch from the clean singing to the growl. Why this choice? Did she study specifically for it?
No, I didn’t study to sing at all, although I still would love to develop as a singer. In fact, back in times when we recorded “Sputnik”, I already growled, especially on live shows. But I had some serious issue with my voice after illness, just during recordings, so we decided to record the growls of Evgeny. And you know, I think it fit really well with those songs. And in my opinion, new songs come better with my growls, and many people agree with that.
I really love extreme vocals, they help to make the right expression.
Do you think it’s hard to emerge as a metal band in the Ukranian music scene?
And what do you think about the international music scene of metal bands with female vocals?
I think, it’s hard to emerge as a band of any genre in any country. Ukraine is tough because of economical problems and non-popularity of heavy music. I mean, Germany or France are far better for that, they have respective industry and infrastructure. However, 95% of our fans are not in Ukraine, so we are not complaining. I believe that we shouldn’t speak about female or male vocals in terms of metal music. It shouldn’t be neither an advantage, nor a disadvantage.
To conclude, what can we expect from Ignea in the future? What are your plans?
At the moment, our plans are to focus on live performances. We signed a contract with a German booking agency — EAM Agentur — and they are currently working on arranging an EU tour for us, which is highly important for our band. As said, most of our listeners are not in Ukraine. We are also planning to release some more videos this year.
And, in fact, we already have new tracks for another release, but we will disclose details later.
